Take Control of Your Health - For a Lifetime

A healthy body comes from the inside out - it begins at the cellular level. Right now, there are many processes happening in your body of which you are not consciously aware. Toxins are being removed via the circulatory system. Tissue repair is occurring. Your skin cells are being replaced. Your bones are laying down new bone tissue in response to weight-bearing activities... In some cases... free radical damage is occurring in the early stages of disease. 

Disease comes subtly over time - when you first notice symptoms, often the issue has been working in your body for months, maybe even years. Factors such as nutrition, sleep habits, environmental factors and exercise can influence the progression one way or the other. A high-fat diet, for example, can contribute to a gradual plaque buildup in the arteries, eventually leading to heart disease. Switching to a meal plan that's high in fruits and veg, moderate in protein, and low in saturated fat can hinder the progression and even reverse it. 

I'm sure many of us have someone in our lives who has experienced a health crisis... perhaps you've 
experienced one first hand. Take my friend Brenda, whose doctor told her some time ago to get her house in order - according to her blood work at the time, she could die any day. She was only 52 years old. Brenda never was one for exercise. She found it too hard and came to believe that it was bad for her bones, a self-imposed mental barrier to activity. It took this particular visit to her physician to spur her into action, and it wasn't easy. She had a Leslie Sansone walking video (VHS at the time) and popped it in... and cried through the whole tape.

"I called Leslie & my doc some bad names (no curse words), BUT I got started very SLOWLY, almost died through the "WARM UP." 

Brenda is now 45 lbs down and 30 inches gone from around her middle. Her most recent blood work showed that she's in the best health of her life - in fact, she has likely added YEARS to her life! While an extreme case, she is a superb example of the fact that you CAN take control of your health, even when things seem bleak. Unfortunately, no one can do it for you, but you CAN do it! 

Where disease prevention is concerned, make some small changes now, such as cutting out fatty foods, controlling portions, eating a variety of veggies & fruits, and get up and get active! Small doses of exercise are very effective - start by fitting in a few brisk 10-minute walks into your day, and build on that. Weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, is key in the prevention of osteoporosis. Join a fitness class at your local gym or community centre. Regardless of your age, you can be in the best health of your life for the rest of your life!
